Today Switzerland beat Spain in their first match of the World Cup. To say that it was a huge upset would be an understatement as the Spanish are one of the top teams in the world and the Swiss aren’t even expected to make it out of their pool.
Perhaps knowing this, the Swiss went crazy – at least by Swiss standards. The match ended around 4pm and for the next six hours people were driving around, honking their horns and waving Swiss flags out their car windows. I’ve never seen anything like it.
Perhaps the closest comparison would be when Roger Federer (the unrivaled national hero of Switzerland) won his first French Open tennis title last year and I could hear cries of joy from many of the nearby apartments.
It was nice to see such a strong sense of patriotism.
