It was another nice weekend, thus continuing the trend of crappy weather during the week followed by a complete turnaround for the weekend. The highlight was a visit to the Fondation de l’Hermitage in the hills above Lausanne. It is currently a museum that holds art exhibitions throughout the year, but began as the home of a wealthy Swiss banker during the 19th century.
The current exhibition is a broad range of works by the American artist Edward Hopper.
While not generally familiar with his art, I had seen the following painting before (Nighthawks – it wasn’t part of the exhibition).
Overall, I thought the exposition was interesting. Nearly every piece came from the Whitney museum in New York City, which is interesting given that I had been to the Whitney before and wasn’t really a big fan of it. Perhaps I had missed the section that housed the works by Hopper.
After the exhibition we walked around the park that surrounds the foundation building. It has great views of the lake and Lausanne Cathedral, as can be seen from the second picture below.
