A weekend in SF

This weekend I went to San Francisco for my friend Lara’s wedding. I left Geneva Friday around noon and returned on a red-eye that departed Sunday night, so it made for a whirlwind trip. In fact, I think that it was the furthest that I’ve ever flown for such a short period of time.

Aside from the wedding, the primary motivation for the trip to SF was the opportunity to spend time with my friends Bill, Garrett and Pat. Garrett and Pat live there while Bill was in town for the wedding as well.

The wedding reception and ceremony were on Saturday afternoon / evening, so that left plenty of free time to spend with my friends. While I’m in touch with them regularly via phone and/or email, it was great to see them in person. We basically just went out to some restaurants, caught up on what’s new and overall had a great time.

The wedding itself turned out to be great. It was held at Fort Mason, which is adjacent to Fisherman’s Wharf and overlooks the San Francisco Bay and Alcatraz. And while the weather for the majority of the weekend was defined by typical SF fog, the sun decided to make a timely appearance during the wedding ceremony. This made a big difference given that the ceremony took place outside.

The wedding reception was great as well, and provided the opportunity to catch up with a number of the girls from my group of friends in high school (and before) that I hadn’t seen in a while. It was fun to hear how everyone was doing and learn about all the latest developments in terms of weddings, marriages, jobs, etc.

Here are a couple of photos from the reception. The first is with me, Lara (the bride) and Bill. The second is with Bill, Julie (a good friend since grade school) and me. It was great to see Julie as I wasn’t able to attend her wedding since it took place shortly after I moved to Switzerland.

My Sunday evening flight came far too quickly, but thankfully I was so exhausted from the weekend and nine hour time difference that I was able to sleep a good amount during the flight back. Unfortunately, my flight got delayed a bit due to air traffic in London, so I missed my connection and had to waste away at Heathrow for about three hours. But at least it happened on the return trip rather than on Friday.
