Dinner in Evian

Tonight Emilie, my parents and I took the boat across the lake to Evian, France, to have dinner with Emilie's father and sister. It was a beautiful evening, feeling much more like Summer than Fall.

The lake was very calm, allowing for a smooth ride and a nice view of the Alps on the southeastern side.

We went to a restaurant selected by Emilie's father that was a short walk from the harbor. The food was very good and the relaxed atmosphere was perfect for conversations in which not all parties were fluent in the others' respective languages (Emilie's father speaks English pretty well; my parents have a couple of years of French from high-school at best).

The cultural highlight of the night came when my parent's blanked on the name of the current French president (Nicolas Sarkozy). I know that they knew it, but the fact that they couldn't think of it at the table led to some funny responses from the French contingent.

Nonetheless, the whole evening turned out very well and provided a nice opportunity for my parents to get to know some of Emilie's family (and vice versa).
