Warsaw

After finishing up with work today I headed back to Warsaw for my weekend visit. I’m staying at the Sofitel Victoria, which is in the Srodmiescie area (roughly translated: “inner city”) and is walking distance from many of the main sights. I arrived a bit late to start the sight seeing this evening, though, so my introduction to Poland was limited to some Polish food and television.

On the food front, I decided to order the only Polish “delicacy” that I was familiar with – pierogi. According to Wikipedia, pierogi are:

“boiled, baked or fried dumplings of unleavened dough traditionally stuffed with potato filling, sauerkraut, ground meat, cheese, or fruit.”

The ones that I ordered were boiled and had various fillings including meat, cheese and cabbage. In all honesty, they were a bit bland although the sauces added a little flavor.

As for Polish TV, I definitely couldn’t understand anything. There were a couple of American shows on, though, and the English wasn’t completely drowned out by the voices dubbed in Polish. Nonetheless, the dubbing was a bit distracting as the dubbed Polish voices were only male, regardless of the sex of the character.
